One of the best ways to reduce knock is to keep the engine intake temperature down, This is an issue when the WRX is bone stock and becomes an even bigger issue when you start to modify it. The stock top mount intercooler simply isnt up to the task. After just a few hard pulls the TMIC quickly becomes heat soaked.
Once the engine detects knock your DAM drops which result in the stock WRX ECU start to reduce ignition timing as intake manifold temperatures climb. Reduced ignition time directly reduced power output. You could replace the stock TMIC with a well-designed aftermarket TMIC. While they are much better than the stock TMIC, with real-world track testing on TMIC and FMIC it clearly shows that even a larger aftermarket TMIC will get heat soaked and can't control the intake temperature due to it's sitting on top of a hot engine. Our 1320 Performance intercooler kit is designed with smooth bends and a larger diameter piping to creates a smooth flow from the turbo to the intercooler.
Our CNC bend piping is powder-coated Black to ensure years of use without fading also both end are bead rolled to ensure at high boost level the silicone coupler would not slip off. Our kit is direct plug and play only modification needed is trim the bumper to clear the larger front mount intercooler which is cover up by the fog light covers. Our kit also includes a washer bottle so you don't lose the windshield washer feature like many other FMIC kit out there.
